2011 Recipient – Pawel Janas

Grass Roots Ultimate is proud to announce Pawel Janas as the inaugural recipient of our Spirit Scholarship award. Pawel is an outstanding young athlete exemplifying Spirit of the Game both on and off the Ultimate field.  Pawel’s Ultimate experience includes several seasons of GRU leagues (after being recruited by Pawel’s neighbor and league player Jenifer Martin), captaining the Boulder High Ultimate team (HULA), and participating with the Colorado Youth Club Championship team (Cutthroat) where he was named 2nd Team All-States for 2011. In addition to Pawel’s dedication to playing the game, he has made himself an invaluable member of the local Ultimate community through his volunteer efforts which include coaching for the Grass Roots Ultimate Program for Youth (GRUPY) as well as assisting with the 2010 Colorado Cup, 2010 Grand Masters & Women’s Masters Championships and 2011 USA Ultimate College Championships.

Away from Ultimate Pawel has proven himself as an exemplary student with an interest in applied mathematics. Pawel graduated Summa Cum Laude from Boulder High and received several distinctions (Council of Teachers of Mathematics Award, Outstanding Performance National French Exams, National Merit Finalist, AP Diploma Recipient, AP Scholar with Distinction). He will be studying at the University of Colorado Boulder beginning in the Fall of 2011. We are confident that Pawel will continue to be an asset to the sport of Ultimate and we are proud to support his education through our Spirit Scholarship award.
