It hires homeless adults who are difficult to employ and outfits them with the skills necessary to re-enter the work force. In partnership with its employees, Street Fare also: raises revenue for the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless, and promotes the Shelter to the community.  Buy cupcakes at the Boulder County Farmers’ markets.

GAME DAY Details

Finals 2010

Saturday:  Saturday Brackets

The captain meeting is at 9:00am on Saturday. Games start at 9:30am sharp. Due the likelihood of routine late-day rain showers in Colorado summers, please adhere to the time schedule.

  • Games to hard 15 (no win by 2). Mirror half.
  • No soft cap, but hard cap at end of round (1:45 mins.)
  • One time out per half plus one float.
  • There is a reseed for the fourth found on Saturday, which includes a A-div/B-Div crossover match. If the B-div beats the A-div in the crossover game the B-div has the option to move up into A-div on Sunday morning. However, a winning A-div does not have the same option to move down into B-div.

Sunday: Round 1: 9:00 am.  Round 2: 10:45 am.  Semis : 12:15. Finals: 2:30.

FIELD USE
Remember as in most urban centers, quality recreational spaces are sparse and competitive adult ultimate does not get highest priority when it comes to obtaining this site. So be mindful of the surrounding neighbors, obey the park regulations, and use your common sense so that you do not jeopardize future ultimate events.

    • No glass bottles permitted on the fields.
    • NO Dogs. Really no dogs, not in your car, not on a leash, not on the fields, and not in the parking lot.
    • Please do not practice at the Pleasant View site until the day of the tournament. If your team is coming in from out of town here is a link to a map of various field locations in Boulder: Field Maps. Please note that certain locations are by reservation only.
Violation of these rules or behavior deemed unacceptable will be grounds for expulsion from the tournament and the facility. The Grass Roots Ultimate Board of Directors (and its designees, including the Tournament Director) and the City of Boulder Recreation Staff reserve the right to enforce this policy.

There is no camping on the fields. Here is a map other amenities in the area.

GRUB Beneficiary

Grass Roots Ultimate received four applications from very worthy organizations and though it is always a difficult decision, we are happy to announce that GRUB 2012 will be raising funds for Street Fare!

Street Fare grew from the passion and commitment of one of our own GRU league players, Sarah Haas. She combined her love of baking and care for community and created an innovative program that we are proud to support. The money raised from GRUB will propel them forward at a critical moment in their young history.

In Sarah’s words…

Street Fare: the Boulder Shelter Bakery is a supportive employment bakery operated by the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless. It hires homeless adults who are difficult to employ and outfits them with the skills necessary to re-enter the work force. In partnership with its employees, Street Fare also: raises revenue for the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless, and promotes the Shelter to the community.  We do this by selling cupcakes and pastries, baked in the Shelter Kitchen with organic and locally sourced ingredients, to patrons of the Boulder County Farmers’ Markets.

In 2011, Street Fare employed nine adults. Of those nine, two are now employed by local businesses, three are signing on for another season of Street Fare with managerial positions and one is now independently housed and back in school in Longmont.

Street Fare is an exploration into the barriers that homeless adults face on their road to self-sufficiency in Boulder County. Supportive employment with Street Fare offers a safe place to test the water, to fail, and to succeed. This success, however, is impossible without the support of the community: our customers, our donors and our cheerleaders.

a little history

Ever wondered about the disc hanging from the tree in the GRU logo?

1992 was the first year of the fundraiser tournament that is now known as the Grass Roots Ultimate Benefit (GRUB) but was initially known as LAMA (Latin American Medical Assistance). The LAMA tournaments supported Steve McCrosky’s work in an indigenous community and a disabled veteran’s group in El Salvador. Over the years of the LAMA tournament, ultimate players donated over $20,000, enough to purchase 10 acres of land and construct two buildings.

In 1993, the proceeds from the tournament were used to support a prosthetics workshop for disabled veterans and a natural medicine pharmacy. That year, Steve spent a couple days working on the design for the tournament. After looking through several books in the indigenous community’s library, he decided to base the design on two different gods.

Tezcatlipoca, an Aztec warrior god, the figure on the left, represents the thrower. In the sky, his constellation appears as a man missing a leg.

Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent, plays defense. What he represented is debated, but he is often related to vegetation renewal, the wind and the sky. In the disc design, he is stalling to ten in the Mayan dot and line numerical system.

While Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca were often described as rivals, they were also described as collaborators in the creation of the world. The disc they play with has the Aztec symbol for fiesta.

The LAMA tournament was a big part of the genesis of Grass Roots Ultimate, and as a nod to this history, when GRU was officially christened; the chosen logo included the disc from the 1993 LAMA design.

GRUB Raised $12,576 for YSI !!

Grass Roots Ultimate is very proud to announce that we raised $12,576 for YSI at GRUB 2011!

Thanks to all who played!

Having 32 teams is the first step in meeting our fundraising goals and it makes for an action packed weekend.

Extra thanks to:

  • Our TD – Baker – for yet another year of hard work – it was a great tournament and a great party!
  • YSI volunteers – they did a great job keeping the tourney flowing and they rounded up awesome tourney food for all to enjoy!
  • The players who went the extra mile in fundraising! Top 5 teams ($ per player) were Jumping Bones, Single Entendre, Trollhaveners, Lawn Gnomes and Red or Green.
  • The teams who came from out of state! (San Diego, San Francisco, L.A., Portland, Fayetteville, Iowa City, Salt Lake, Albuquerque, Casper). Fun to play less familiar faces, and to meet new friends.

Thanks again all!

See you next year.
