About Our League
Grass Roots Ultimate Spring League is for adult mixed teams that are selected by volunteer captains based on a draft system. We provide the means for family members to play together on the same team (via player requests, aka “baggage”).
We offer two division of play: A and B. The B division is appropriate for beginners, mentors, and those casual players who are comfortable supporting beginner level play. The B division tends to be more social, offering opportunities to practice and socialize outside of the scheduled game times. The A division is appropriate for more experienced players. Less experienced, but highly athletic players may succeed in the A league with the right support. Please contact us if you have questions about which league is right for you.
Weather Cancellations
Weather in Colorado can vary incredibly, especially in spring—rain, snow, and high winds possible. We will assess the playability of the fields each week. If games must be canceled, we will make an announcement on the website, on our hotline (303-661-0664), to gru-chat, and to the captains no later than one (1) hour before the start of scheduled games. Spring season 2008, we have the option to cancel only early games when it appears that conditions may improve. If a given round of games is canceled, captains and their teams will have the option to reschedule their games for later in the day or on another day as a make-up. We appreciate your understanding when games are canceled on a day that turns out to be lovely. The decision is often made outside of our control and/or far in advance due to the need to make notifications.
Lost and Found
If you either lose or find something at the games, you may contact our Lost and Found Coordinator at lost.found@gru.org.
Parents
We are trying to organize parents in our community in the hopes of creating/supporting child care options during games. If you’re interested in this initiative, send an email to parents@gru.org.
Volunteers
This league and our organization is wholly run by volunteers. If you have an interest in helping us help you, please let us know. We can use help with both game-day operations as well as other support and outreach activities.

Spring League 2008 Registration
Just the Facts
- Dates: Sundays, March 23 – June 1 (no games Memorial Day Weekend)
- Times: Between 10am and 4pm, varies each week, probable double-headers
Location: Platt Middle School, BoulderBroomfield County Commons, Red Pod (see map below)- Cost: $45
- Coordinator: Larry Wagg
Other Dates
- Beginners’s Clinic: Sunday, March 16, location TBD
- Tournament: Sunday, June 1
- League Party: TBD
Format
Spring League will have two divisions of play: A and B. The format for A League will depend on the numbers of women that register, with a goal of providing a ratio of 4 men/3 women if possible. The format for B league will be 4 men/3 women.
Registration
To register go to https://registration.gru.org.
Our goal is to provide league play with a 4/3 ratio of men to women. Our approach is to register as many women as possible before opening registration for men. This allows us to know with a higher degree of confidence how many teams we can form and therefore how many men’s slots will be available. Traditionally, the men’s slots for both A and B divisions fill up very quickly (within 1-3 days). Based on this experience the registration schedule has been set as follows:
- Women Only: February 11 – March 4
- Open Registration: March 5 – March 7
Advanced Registration for Men
Men can get advanced registration in the following ways:
- Have a woman register and name you as her player request.
- Recruit a woman who has never played in our leagues before. She does NOT have to request you to play on the same team with her.
- Volunteer to captain (subject to availability).
In each of these cases, you must contact the league coordinator (email league@gru.org) so that he can verify your eligibility for advanced registration. If you qualify, he will add you to the “back door” waitlist and then release you.
When you are released, you will receive an email informing you that you will be able complete your registration and payment. The system gives you 2 days to complete your registration. After that two days your release status will expire and prevent you from completing the registration. If this happens to you, just contact us and we’ll re-release you. In order to take advantage of the advanced registration, you must complete your registration before March 5th.

After registration is completed, the captains will meet to draft the teams for the season. After the draft (which is on March 18), each captain will notify his/her selected players to notify them about the schedule and any other pertinent information. If you have not heard from your captain by the Friday before league begins (March 21), please contact us.
We will also make every attempt to keep the website updated with
the rosters and schedules as soon as they are known.
Weather Cancellations
While the weather in Colorado is usually sunny, Spring is a time of wild unpredictability, with rain, snow, and wind possible. We will make every attempt to assess the playability of the fields each week. If games must be canceled, we will make an announcement on the website, on our hotline (303-661-0664), to gru-chat, and to the captains. Please forgive us if we decide to cancel games on a day that turns out to be lovely. The decision is often made outside of our control and/or far in advance due to the need to make notifications.

Tournaments
Grass Roots Annual Spring Mixer (GASM)
A great warm-up tournament for Grass Roots Ultimate spring season. An entirely randomized hat tournament where players switch teams four times during the one-day event. The entry fee is only $10-15 because Grass Roots Ultimate partially subsidizes the event. Prizes are awarded for individual players, instead of teams. See photos from 2005 and 2006. Spaces are limited; check your email and sign up early!
Grass Roots Ultimate Benefit (GRUB)
GRUB started in Boulder, Colorado, in 1991, as a local tournament. But even back then, the tournament put its emphasis on donating to a local charity. Each year, approximately 30 teams come from around the country to play two days of Ultimate in Boulder. GRUB raises close to $10,000 (sometimes more!) each year for local, non-profit organizations. The application process begins in early summer for the beneficiary. Past beneficiaries include Intercambio de Communidades, Sage Community Partnership, and Boulder Women’s Shelter. Each team competes on the field for donated prizes and off the field to raise the most money. There is also an individual prize for the person who raises the most money.
Past prizes include an iPod, a trip to Mexico, sweatshirts, and a margarita-making kit. Local organizations such as Knudsen Juices, Boulder Beer, and Redstone Meadery have donated their products for all participants to enjoy. See photos from previous tournaments and learn more about GRUB.
Visit the GRUB page here
Grass Roots Ultimate Annual Savage Seven (GRASS)
In this tournament, teams have very limited player rosters and there are no substitutions once each game starts. This two-day tournament attracts Ultimate players from across Colorado and the Midwest. An average of 15 teams participate each year. See photos from previous tournaments and learn more about GRASS.

Grass Roots Ultimate Leagues
Grass Roots Ultimate offers three coed recreational leagues each year: spring, summer and fall. Each season is split into two divisions: A and B. A is for more advanced and experienced players looking for a good-spirited, competitive game; B is for beginners or those players seeking less competitive play. We use a draft system to create teams: players ranks themselves individually and then are drafted by volunteer captains onto teams. This keeps the teams somewhat even on skills and expands our community. Directions to fields used by Grass Roots Ultimate.
